Dover – Lt. Gov. John C. Carney, Jr.’s Project HomeSafe received the endorsement of the Delaware Police Council, Inc. The program, which was developed and partially funded by the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), will distribute free gun locks and information on firearm safety across the state.
Lt. Gov. Carney, Dave Bean of the NSSF and Project HomeSafe, members of law enforcement and elementary school students will kick off the program with two events tomorrow, Tuesday, Oct. 23.
At 10 a.m.,the group will be at Warner Elementary School at 810 West 18th St. in Wilmington. At 1:30 p.m., there will be a second event in front of Legislative Hall in Dover. The Project HomeSafe van, which will travel across the state through Sunday and host giveaways in nine towns, will be on display at both events. A schedule of stops is included.
“The endorsement of the Police Chiefs Council shows how important this program is,” Carney said. “Project HomeSafe is about safety, particularly the safety of our children. Anyone who owns a firearm should come to one of our stops, get their questions about gun safety answered and pick up a free gun lock.”
Project HomeSafe, which is endorsed by the National Conference of Lieutenant Governors, has a goal of distributing 3 million gun locks nationwide. The program was developed by the NSSF, which is the leading trade organization for the firearms and shooting sports industry. The NSSF has been a leader in firearms safety education activities since it’s formation in 1961.
“Our goal is to provide firearm safety education at the community level throughout the country,” said Doug Painter, executive director of the NSSF. “The support of the lieutenant governor and law enforcement agencies is tremendous.”
