Carney announces Lt. Governor’s Challenge in five
towns;
encourages Delawareans to be more active
Wilmington – Lt. Governor John C. Carney, Jr. kicked off the Lt. Governor’s Challenge, Friday, May 24, with a statewide announcement tour. The day began at 8 a.m. in Laurel, continued with stops in Rehoboth Beach, Dover and Middletown before ending with a 6 p.m. fun walk at Dravo Plaza on the Wilmington Riverfront. A detailed schedule is attached.
The Challenge’s goal is to help make the First State the Fit State. The Lt. Governor has developed the program in conjunction with the American Cancer Society, Christiana Care, the Division of Public Health and the University of Delaware. The Challenge was created to help make Delawareans aware that being more physically active doesn’t mean countless hours at the gym or running marathons.
Participants in the Lt. Governor’s Challenge accumulate points by completing any of a wide variety of daily activities. After three months, participants are awarded a gold, silver or bronze medal based on the number of points they earned. Participants use an official Challenge logbook to track their progress.
“The great thing about this Challenge is that there are so many daily activities – like walking or gardening – that are included,” Carney said. “These activities are a great chance for families and friends to spend some time together, meet new people, have some fun and be more physically active.”
Lt. Governor Carney also encourages groups to take the Challenge because it adds an element of support and fun to the participants. By taking the Challenge, Delawareans will take the first step toward a healthier lifestyle.
The tour highlighted a number of existing programs that participants can join to earn Challenge points, including a faith-based class, a community running group, a seniors group, a school-based walking program and a family fun walk.
