Mid-Atlantic Association of Community Health Centers presents Lt. Governor Carney 2004 Legislator’s Award
Wilmington – The Mid-Atlantic Association of Community Health Centers (MACHC) presented its 2004 Legislator’s Award to Delaware Lt. Governor John C. Carney, Jr., today.
Carney has been involved with community health centers in Delaware as a member of the Delaware Health Care Commission. He has chaired the commission since 2001 and was instrumental in starting and developing the Community Healthcare Access Program (CHAP), which provides a health care home for Delawareans whose annual income is between 100 percent and 200 percent of the Federal Poverty Limit.
“Our Legislator Awards are made based on recommendations from our health center members,” MACHC’s Deitra Bell said. “Lt. Governor Carney was chosen for a number of reasons. He was one of the early public officials to become a champion of the (Federal Qualified Health Centers). He has taken a genuine interest in health care access for all Delawareans. He understands the many issues that community health centers face, including provider capacity, meeting the needs of the communities, and the costs involved in delivering care. Lt. Governor Carney has made a significant difference in community health centers.”
Federally Qualified Health Centers in Delaware include Westside Health, Henrietta Johnson Medical Center, Delmarva Rural Ministries/Kent Community Health Center and La Red Health Center (look alike). Additional centers participate in the CHAP. Carney was nominated for this year’s award by Delaware members of MACHC.
“The community health centers in Delaware are so important, particularly in providing a health home for those underinsured and uninsured Delawareans,” Carney said. “I’m proud of the work we’ve done to support them and look forward to finding new ways to help them serve their communities.”
