Delaware’s John Carney takes over Chairmanship of National Lieutenant Governors Association
Wilmington – Lt. Governor John C. Carney, Jr., of Delaware became chairman of the National Lieutenant Governors Association (NLGA) at the organization’s annual meeting last week. Carney, who served on the NLGA’s executive committee for the past year as chair-elect, will lead the group for the next year.
“As an active, non-partisan organization, the NLGA has created a forum for Lt. Governors to talk about issues and exchange best practices,” Carney said. “It provides all of us a great opportunity to find effective ways to address new problems, foster cooperation between states and generally improve the effectiveness of our offices.”
The NLGA was formed in 1962 as the professional association for the elected officials who are next in line of succession to the governors of the 50 states and five territorial jurisdictions of American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Carney succeeds Lt. Governor Karl Ohs of Montana (R), who served as chairman for the last year. The chairman’s gavel officially changed hands Saturday.
“The NLGA is in good hands,” said Ohs. “John is a man of integrity and great skill and talent. I have enjoyed working with him.”
Last week’s meeting featured presentations and discussions on a variety of issues, including energy policy, agriculture, small business and the challenges of education.
