Senator Colin Bonini and Lt. Governor John Carney kick off Bonini’s “Pounds for Hounds” fundraiser

Lt. Governot John C. Carney, Jr.

Dover -State Senator Colin Bonini (16th District) was joined by Lt. Governor John C. Carney, Jr., at the Kent County SPCA, 32 Shelter Circle in Camden today to kick off his "Pounds for Hounds" fund-raiser. In an effort to help the Senator get started on his weight-loss program, Lt. Governor Carney enrolled him in the "Lt. Governor’s Challenge" physical activity program.

Senator Bonini has pledged to lose as much weight as he can from Feb. 1 through the end of the Legislative session on June 30.Senator Bonini is asking the public to sponsor him in his efforts to lose weight and give to a worthy cause: the Kent County SPCA. He is hoping the Lt. Governor’s Challenge will provide added incentive in getting fit.

"John is a good friend and I know he cares about the health of all Delawareans, so I’m thankful he is sponsoring me and will help me help the SPCA," Senator Bonini said. "Plus, I needed a thin guy around to help inspire me! Let’s face it, I’ve got to lose some serious weight and I think helping a great organization such as the SPCA will give me the motivation to finally take off some pounds."

The Challenge, which Lt. Governor Carney started about two-and-a-half years ago, has had more than 17,000 people sign up, including participants from schools, corporate, faith-based and senior organizations. The Challenge was developed in conjunction with the American Cancer Society, Christiana Care, the Division of Public Health, the Delaware State Chamber of Commerce and the University of Delaware.

"The Challenge began with the goal of making the First State the Fit State," said Lt. Governor Carney. "By teaming with a number of organizations, state employees and residents all over Delaware, we’ve been able to motivate thousands of Delawareans to be more physically active. Colin is the latest to join and we’re glad to have him. The Challenge is a program that requires self-motivation, but I promise you I’ll personally be checking on Colin in the coming weeks and months."

Participants in the Lt. Governor"s Challenge accumulate points by completing any of a wide variety of daily activities. After three months, participants are awarded a gold, silver or bronze medal based on the number of points they earned. Participants use an official Challenge logbook to track their progress.

Anyone wishing to help Senator Bonini lose weight can make a monetary pledge for every pound lost from Feb. 1 to June 30. All proceeds will go to the SPCA. The Senator has over 40 pledges to date and hopes to realize his goal of 100 pledges. Pledges can be from a minimum of 10 cents per pound up to any amount.

If you would like to sponsor his efforts, please call Senator Bonini at (302) 698-0960 or e-mail him at senator-colin@prodigy.net
