Lt. Governor Carney Recognizes Dr. Doug Tynan as the 25,000th Person to Take the Lt. Governor's Challenge
Wilmington - At noon today, Lt. Governor John Carney, joined by Michael Graves, President of the YMCA of Delaware, announced Dr. Doug Tynan as the 25,000th participant in the Lt. Governor's Challenge. As the milestone participant Dr. Tynan was awarded a one-year membership to the Brandywine YMCA.
Dr. Tynan enjoyed participating in the Lt. Governor's Challenge because "it's flexible and shows that exercise doesn't have to be a solid hour on a treadmill. You can walk the dog, mow the lawn and plant flowers. It's all physical activity and it all counts."
The Challenge, which celebrates its 4th anniversary tomorrow, was created to help make Delawareans aware that being more physically active doesn't mean countless hours at the gym. "The Challenge isn't about running a marathon or becoming a power lifter," Carney said. "It's about having a good time with family and friends. Doug and his family have done it the right way - making a physical activity a part of their daily routine." Carney also stated, "Initially our goal was to sign up 10,000 participants in three years. Having reached 25,000 in just one day shy of four years is gratifying. It's great to see the people of Delaware embrace the Challenge and embrace physical activity."
Michael Graves remarked, "We are pleased to be a partner of the Lt. Governor's Challenge and even more pleased that Dr. Tynan recognizes the benefits of a YMCA membership."
Doug Tynan, PhD, is a pediatric psychologist with Nemours, including the Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children and Nemours Health and Prevention Services. He is on the pediatric faculty at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University and serves on the National Committee for Evaluation of Head Start programs. Dr. Tynan and his family believe in the power of prevention; they are all active members of the Brandywine YMCA.
Participants in the Lt. Governor's Challenge accumulate points by completing any of a wide variety of daily activities. After three months, participants are awarded a gold, silver or bronze medal based on the number of points they earned. Participants use an official Challenge logbook to track their progress.
