Lt. Governor, Health Professionals Celebrate Be Healthy Delaware Day
Lt. Governor John Carney was joined by Wilmington Mayor James Baker and members of the Governor's Council on Lifestyle and Fitness (GCLF) today to celebrate "Be Healthy Delaware" Day. The event took place in Rodney Square as attendees were encouraged to adopt one healthy habit for the day that they would normally not do. Over 800 people pledged to practice at least one healthy behavior.
"Be Healthy Delaware Day is a great opportunity for people to form habits that will improve their long-term health," said Carney. "Lifestyle changes start one day at a time, and events like this are important to motivate us and get us started down the right path."
"I firmly believe that we must all do whatever we can to protect our health and well-being," stated Mayor Baker. "By simply choosing to be more active and more educated about healthy lifestyles and the health resources available to us, we can prevent many diseases and illnesses."
The "Be Healthy Delaware" celebration also honored the recipients of this year's Governor's Council on Lifestyle and Fitness Awards. Helene Gladney, a health promotions consultant for the City of Wilmington, Denise Taylor & Becky King, administrators of the "Dare to Live Healthy the Red Clay Way" program, and Alan Waterfield, retired University of Delaware professor and GCLF member, were recognized for their outstanding and lasting contributions to health and fitness in the state.
"I'm glad we had the opportunity to honor each of this year's GCLF Award winners," said Lt. Governor Carney. "All of them have dedicated their lives to helping Delawareans make better choices and avoid some of the common health risks that so many of us struggle with on a daily basis."
"Be Healthy Delaware" Day is a collaboration between the Office of Lt. Governor John Carney, the Governor's Council on Lifestyle and Fitness, and the newly-formed Delaware Center for Health Promotion.
