Lt. Governor John C. Carney Jr.

Lt. Governor Carney Receives Humanitarian of the Year Award

Newark - Lt. Governor John Carney received the Robert J. Berndt Humanitarian of the Year award this afternoon from the Governor's Advisory Council to the Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health.  The award recognizes Lt. Governor Carney's efforts to raise awareness about mental health issues across the state, particularly in his role as Chair of the Delaware Healthcare Commission.

"It's very special to be honored among the many concerned Delawareans who have fought to raise the issue of mental health in our communities," said Lt. Governor Carney.  "We often focus so much on the physical challenges that many Delawareans face that we neglect the mental side of good health.  It's important that we address both to make Delaware a healthier place to live."

Lt. Governor Carney has made mental health a priority for the Delaware Healthcare Commission.  As Chair, he established the Committee on Mental Health Issues to analyze the problems associated with mental illness in Delaware and provide recommendations to improve treatment options.

James Lafferty, Chair of the Governor's Advisory Council to the Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health, said, "John has done more than anyone else to elevate mental health to high levels on the radar screen of the Delaware Healthcare Commission."

The award was presented at the Delaware Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health's 36th Summer Institute, being held this week at the University of Delaware.  Previous winners include Sen. Nancy Cook, Sen. Patricia Blevins, and Rep. Pete Schwartzkopf.
