Lt. Governor John Carney Meets With General Motors Officials to Discuss Company's Delaware Facility
Lt. Governor John Carney met today with executives from General Motors, including Gary Cowger, GM Group Vice President of Global Manufacturing and Labor Relations, to discuss the company's assembly plant on Boxwood Road in Newport.
"It was a very good meeting," the Lt. Governor said. "The lines of communication are open, and it's important to let them know of our strong interest and commitment to keeping the plant. Boxwood Road has one of the most productive, high-quality workforces in the country, and the same can be said about the workers in Chrysler's Newark assembly plant. I think it's the responsibility of state officials to remind both companies of that every chance we get."
General Motors recently reached a new labor agreement with the United Auto Workers. As a result of that agreement, there is currently no new vehicle products assigned to the GM Wilmington Boxwood Road assembly plant after 2012.
"I'm going to take every opportunity to talk with GM about the future of the assembly plant here," Lt. Governor Carney said. "They need to know that we're ready to go to work. Our job is to make the Boxwood Road plant as able to compete as possible. There have been times when the future wasn't bright for that plant and we've found a way to work together to find solutions beneficial to everyone. I'm confident we'll do the same in this instance."
