Lt. Governor John C. Carney Jr.

Lt. Governor Carney Encourages Delaware To Honor Dr. King's Memory Through Community Service

This weekend, we honor one of the great Americans in our country's distinguished history: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. King was a man of courage and leadership who was committed to the protection of civil rights and equality for all. He brought hope to this great nation, and through his actions, we saw bravery and dedication as he fought for what he knew was right.

Dr. King knew that it's not enough just to talk about changing our communities, we need to make it happen. As such, his birthday should not just be a celebration of his life and a remembrance of the great contributions he made to our society. Above all, it should be a day of service, both to each other and our community as a whole.

This Monday, members of my staff and I will be volunteering at the Hogar CREA Women's Center, which is a residential treatment center in Wilmington for women struggling with substance abuse. We will be helping the residents paint their dining room and kitchen. If anyone would like to join us, we will be meeting at Hogar CREA Women's Center, 110 W. 30th St. in Wilmington, at 10:00 a.m.

If you can't make it out with us on Monday, I encourage you to find another way to give back to your community. Everyday, volunteers are needed to help feed the hungry, mentor a young person, or help clean up a local park. The possibilities are endless.

The best way that we can honor the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King is by keeping his message alive. Dr. King dedicated his life to serving others, and his birthday should be a reminder that we can all do more to care for one another.
