Lt. Governor Carney Presents Public Safety Grant To Delaware State University
Lt. Governor John C. Carney, Jr., chair of the Criminal Justice Council, presented today a grant to President Allen Sessoms and Police Chief James Overton to purchase increased public safety equipment for Delaware State University's campus. The grant, totaling over $22,000, will be used to buy a wireless emergency notification system and two portable metal detectors.
"It's great to be able to present this check today and help Del. State upgrade its public safety equipment," said CJC Chairman Carney. "Student safety is our highest priority. President Sessoms, Police Chief Overton, and all the officers that work here on a daily basis do a great job of protecting these young men and women, and I'm happy to be able to provide the additional tools they need to do their jobs effectively."
In the event of an emergency, wireless notification acts as a "reverse 911" system. All students, faculty, and staff registered with the system will receive a phone call giving them information and instructions on how to remain safe. Beginning in March, students will have the option to register with the system, and it will become mandatory starting in August.
"We know that communication is essential for dealing with an emergency situation on campus," said DSU President Allen Sessoms. "The wireless notification system we can now purchase is used on many campuses throughout the country, and will make us better prepared to deal with any situation that may arise."
