Lt. Governor Carney Honored by Delaware Parents
Lt. Governor John Carney was recognized last weekend by the Delaware Parents Association for his work to strengthen Delaware families and improve services available to Delaware children. The group presented Carney with their Governmental Service Award, which is given annually to a public servant who supports their mission of using strong parental support and active communities to keep Delaware youth on the right track. The award was given Saturday, April 26th, at the Delaware Parents' Association's 20th Anniversary dinner at the Dover Sheraton.
"It's a tremendous honor to accept this award from so many caring and dedicated parents," said Lt. Governor Carney. "I know how important my parents' influence was on me growing up, and I've tried to provide the same strong and loving support for my two boys. There's no substitute in a child's life for good parenting. That's why, throughout my career, I've tried to do everything I can to support parents and give them the tools they need to build strong families."
As Chair of the Delaware Health Care Commission, Carney has taken an active role in expanding the SCHIP program, which provides thousands of Delaware children with access to high quality healthcare. He also created the Models of Excellence in Education program, which recognizes and replicates successful education programs throughout the state. In addition, Carney has been an active mentor at Warner Elementary School in Wilmington, and serves as Honorary Chair of the Delaware Mentoring Council. In this role, he encourages Delaware businesses to take a more active role in mentoring.
Harold Stafford, Executive Director of the Delaware Parents' Association, stated, "Lt. Governor Carney was selected to receive the award because of his long-term commitment to promoting services to build strong, resilient and healthy families."
The Delaware Parents' Association seeks to provide a place for parental support and empowerment by working with parents to plan, design, and implement parent-youth programs of their choice.
