Statement from Lt. Governor John Carney on the Passing of Mayor Bill McLaughlin
Lt. Governor John C. Carney, Jr., today issued the following comments on the passing of former Wilmington Mayor Bill McLaughlin:
"Delaware has lost a dedicated public servant in Mayor Bill McLaughlin. As a World War II veteran, City Councilman, and Mayor, Bill spent his whole life serving his country, his city, and his community. He truly loved Wilmington, and he worked tirelessly to provide new opportunities for its residents. His record of outstanding service reflects his personality and commitment to helping others.
Even after Bill retired from elected office, he continued his strong dedication to the community through his many charitable works. In particular, through the William T. and Mary A. McLaughlin Education Fund, he helped countless young people pursue a better life through education.
Bill was a humble man, and he was a man of faith. Before his illness, I saw him regularly at first Sunday Mass at St. Mary's, his boyhood parish. Today, we've lost a true friend, a real gentleman, and a great public servant. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family."
