Dover - Lt. Governor John C. Carney, Jr. invited all Delawareans to take a victory lap of their own as Dover International Speedway opened the Monster Mile for Delawareans to burn a little shoe rubber. The fun walk took take place at Dover International Speedway on Wednesday, June 28, at 12 noon.
The Challenge, which Carney started four years ago, has had over 25,000 people sign up and has many group participants, including corporate, faith-based and senior organizations. The Challenge was created to help make Delawareans aware that being more physically active doesn't mean countless hours at the gym. "The Challenge isn't about running a marathon or becoming a power lifter," Carney said. "It's about having a good time with family and friends. I can't think of a better place to get some physical activity while having fun than at a state landmark like Dover International Speedway."
Participants in the Lt. Governor's Challenge accumulate points by completing any of a wide variety of daily activities. After three months, participants are awarded a gold, silver or bronze medal based on the number of points they earned. Participants use an official Challenge logbook to track their progress.
"We are thrilled to host the Lt. Governor's Challenge here at the Monster Mile for the past three years," said Gary Camp, director of public relations for Dover International Speedway. "You don't have to be a race fan to be in awe of a place that can accommodate 140,000 guests, and brings so much to the people and economy of Delaware. We're glad to support such a worthwhile cause, and give participants in the Lt. Governor's Challenge the opportunity to experience the track up close and personal."
