Dover, DE - Lt. Governor John C. Carney, Jr. announced two programs on Friday that will make it easier for Delaware's volunteer firefighters to protect us in emergencies. At the Delaware Volunteer Firemen's Association's Annual Conference, Lt. Governor Carney announced that firefighters would soon be able to participate in the state government's reduced electric rate plan, and also detailed six loans totaling $1million to help with equipment and maintenance costs.
"These men and women don't get enough recognition," Lt. Governor Carney stated, "Everyday, they risk their lives to help their fellow Delawareans at the most crucial times, and anything we as a state can do to help them is certainly worthwhile."
Allowing DVFA companies to participate in the electric plan recently negotiated by the state and Direct Energy is expected to significantly reduce their rates. Some companies will see as much as a 30% decrease in their monthly bills that can be put towards other budget items.
The first six loans were distributed to the Five Points, Bowers, Townsend, Odessa, Harrington, and Rehoboth Beach Fire Companies. Each of these loans will be used to replace or repair rescue trucks and ambulances in need of service.
"It's great to have the opportunity to partner with the state in these two areas. Repair costs and rising electric rates are two pressing concerns for Delaware's volunteer firefighters, and these programs go a long way in helping these dedicated men and women continue their quality service to the people of this state," said Jim Cubbage, Executive Director of DVFA.
