Thursday, October 5, 2006

Dover, DE - Lt. Governor John Carney joined with the Delaware Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday, November 1st, for the 2006 Sharing Forum. At the annual conference, winners from the Lt. Governor's "Models of Excellence in Education" program and the Chamber's "Superstars in Education" program, share their ideas and success with members of the state's education and business communities.

"Delaware schools are coming up with very creative and effective ways of improving education in this state," said Lt. Governor John Carney. "One of the best ways to continue this improvement is not only by recognizing the achieving schools, but giving them an opportunity to communicate their ideas with other schools that need a little more help."

Each year, "Models of Excellence" schools are chosen from a group that have shown continuous improvement on their DSTP scores, as well as progress in closing the minority and low-income achievement gaps. The 2006 winners include Castle Hills Elementary School, David W. Harlan Elementary School, East Millsboro Elementary School, and F. Neil Postlethwait Middle School.

"Superstars in Education" winners are selected for their innovative programs that inspire students and raise student achievement. This year's winners were David W. Harlan Elementary School, Delcastle Technical High School, Etta J. Wilson Elementary School, the Indian River School District, New Castle Middle School, and Thomas Edison Charter School.

Each of these schools were recognized at the Sharing Forum and given the opportunity to present their award-winning programs. The winners led panel discussions about their initiatives in content, data collection, and management.

After the conference, Lt. Governor Carney stated, "I was pleased to have so many members of Delaware's education and business communities present. These two groups are very important for preserving Delaware's future and keeping our economy strong. They need to work together to build on the great things happening in our schools."
