Lt. Governor Denn Works 10 Jobs in 10 Schools
Denn continues to visit Delaware's schools
For Immediate Release: Wednesday, September 30, 2009
Wilmington - As part of his effort to help improve Delaware's public schools, Lieutenant Governor Matt Denn is spending portions of his days during the month of October working at front-line jobs in Delaware's public schools. These jobs-which include teaching, assisting special education students, maintenance work, work in the nurse's office, and work in the school cafeteria--will give Denn a first-hand view of the challenges our schools face every day.
Lieutenant Governor Denn, whose office is focused on children's issues including public education, visited administrators and teachers in several schools during the first five months of this year. "Those visits were very helpful and I am going to keep them up," Denn said, "but actually working side by side with our educators will give me a whole new perspective." At the end of each working session, Denn is also meeting with groups of teachers to talk to them about how the state can help them with their important work.
Denn already worked as a substitute teacher on Tuesday morning at Laurel Middle School, and helped the maintenance crew at Hodgson Vocational Technical High School on Wednesday morning. "Both of these experiences were very valuable," Denn said. "At Laurel Middle School, I was able to see the challenges our teachers face in trying to motivate and educate students whose abilities cover an incredibly broad range. And at Hodgson, I got a real sense of the hard work it takes to maintain the physical facilities in which our kids go to school."
