JAMES H. GROVES ADULT HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM


Purpose:The purpose of the Groves Adult High School is to open doors of opportunity for adults and out-of-school youth by enabling them to graduate from high school and improve the options they have in life especially for employment.
History:James H. Groves Adult High School is a State Board of Education approved and the only statewide Middle States accredited secondary adult high school in the nation. Groves was created by the Legislature in 1964 to provide an opportunity for those who left school prior to graduation thus increasing their employment options. Groves was first accredited by Middle States in 1984. Two additional accreditations have been conducted by Middle States.
Eligibility:Individuals 16 years or older and out-of-school are eligible to enroll.
Requirements:All graduates must have 22 credits with a Career Pathway and computer literacy.
Locations:The Groves High School program is one school located at eight administrative centers: Wilmington, Marshallton, Newark, New Castle, Middletown, Kent, Sussex and Diploma-At-A-Distance. There are numerous sites where instruction is given including each of the state's prisons.
Graduates:Groves graduates approximately 350 students annually; one out of every five graduates in Delaware is a Groves graduate.
Number of Participants:There are more than 2,000 adult students enrolled annually.
Demographic Information:83.4% of the students have family incomes under the state individual average income; 75% intend to improve their economic status as a result of attending Groves.
Program Results:Groves graduates participate in post-secondary education (85%), obtain jobs, and approximately one-quarter achieve Academic Honor status.
Cost to Participants:Each student must pay a $40/semester materials fee. (This program is state tuition funded.)
Community Linkages and Public Support:Linkages and collaborative efforts with business and industry and other agencies have been developed to offer courses on location.
