ADULT BASIC EDUCATION PROGRAM
| Purpose: | The purpose of Adult Basic Education is to open doors of opportunity for adults and out-of-school youth with less than eighth grade level skills to improve their academic skills, life skills and improve the quality of lives. |
| History: | Adult Basic Education was created by federal law in the early 1960s. |
| Eligibility: | Individuals 16 years or older and out-of-school are eligible to enroll. |
| Locations: | Adult Basic Education is provided by school districts, community colleges, libraries, community centers and prisons. |
| Number of Participants: | There are more than 6,000 students enrolled annually . |
| Demographic Information: | 49% of the students have no family income; 95% intend to improve their skills for daily living or to get a job as a result of attending Adult Basic Education. |
| Program Results: | Adult Basic Education students obtain jobs, improve their skills to hold a job, get a promotion, help their children with school work, and/or enter training programs. |
| Cost to Participants: | There are no charges to the program participant by federal law that prohibits charging students for service. (This program is federally funded. There is a 25% required state/local match.) |
| Community Linkages and Public Support: | Linkages and collaborative efforts with social service and other agencies have been developed. |
