GED PROGRAM


Purpose:The purpose of the GED program is to provide an opportunity for adults and out-of-school youth to demonstrate the skills equivalent to those of a high school graduate.
History:The GED program began after World War II as a means of allowing adults obtain a high school equivalency.
Eligibility:Individuals 18 years or older and not enrolled in school are eligible to take the test. Individuals who are age 16 or 17 can take the GED through a waiver process.
Locations:The GED testing program is offered in eight locations across the state. They are Appoquinimink School District, Christina School District, New Castle County Voc Tech District, Delaware Technical and Community College- Stanton Campus, and Delaware Technical and Community College- Owens Campus.
Number of Participants:There are about 1,500 individuals who take the test annually. Delaware's pass rate is the highest in the nation at 96%.
Program Results:GED recipients enroll in college, qualify for a job, and/or enter training programs
Cost to Participants:The fee for taking the GED test is $75. Each retest is $25/sub-test. (This program is self-sustaining.)
Community Linkages and Public Support:Linkages and collaborative efforts with prisons, youth detention centers and other locations to administer the test.
