GROVES IN-SCHOOL TRANSFER PROGRAM (An Alternative Secondary Education Program)

Purpose:The purpose of Groves In-School Transfer Program is to provide flexible options for in-school students to earn credit to graduate from their high school without having to dropout of school.
History:Groves In-School Transfer Program was created in 1989 in response to the need to decrease the dropout rate and to offer an opportunity for in-school students to earn credits for graduation. This mechanism allowed students to extend their school day. When courses are passed, credits are transferred back to the student's home high school.
Eligibility:Individuals 16 - 21 years of age and in-school are eligible to enroll.
Requirements:All credits earned can be transfer back to the home high school.
Locations:The Groves In-School Transfer program is located at seven administrative centers: Wilmington, Marshallton, Newark, Middletown, New Castle, Kent, and Sussex. Courses are also offered at the home high school after the regular school day.
Graduates:Groves In-School Transfer Program students graduate from their home high school. For students who are not seniors, they are able to "catch up" with their graduating class. Since its inception 80% of the enrollees are successful in earning credits and/or graduating.
Number of Participants:There are approximately 1,000 students enrolled annually.
Demographic Information:100% of the students have fallen behind in the number of credits needed for graduation. They range in age from 16 to 21 with the average age being 17. Priority is given to seniors who represent 50+% of the enrollees. Students typically take two courses / semester.
Program Results:Groves In-School Transfer Program has decreased the state dropout rate and provided flexibility to students to earn credits toward graduation.
Cost to Participants:There is no charge to students to attend this program. (This program is state funded.)
Community Linkages and Public Support:Linkages and collaborative efforts with the home high school initiate student referrals from the home high school.
