Lt. Governor John C. Carney Jr.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

November 27, 2006

By Lt. Governor John C. Carney, Jr.

The clock is ticking on 2006. Thanksgiving has just passed, Christmas is right around the corner, and pretty soon we'll be celebrating the start of a new year. Everyone's lives get busier during the holiday season, and between the parties, shopping, and family gatherings, eating healthy and exercising are probably the last things on most people's minds.

Maintaining fitness through the holidays is a challenge for many people and it requires commitment to a healthy lifestyle and regular physical activity. The Lt. Governor's Challenge provides such a commitment and can help you enjoy the holiday season and stay fit at the same time.

The Challenge, which I started four years ago, encourages people to incorporate regular physical activity into their daily lives. Participants accumulate points by completing any of a wide variety of daily activities. After three months, participants are awarded a gold, silver, or bronze medal based on the number of points they earned.

The purpose of the Challenge is not to turn everyone into a body builder or a marathon runner. It's about having fun with family and friends while improving your health. Doing simple activities a few times a week, like walking around the neighborhood or going for a bike ride, will have you well on your way to earning a gold medal and improving your lifestyle.

The holidays are a busy time for all of us, but it's important not to forget about our health among all the other events that fill our schedules. More than 27,000 Delawareans have taken the Challenge. If you'd like to join them during this holiday season, or just want more information, please don't hesitate to call my office at (302) 577-8787 or visit the Challenge website at http://www.getupanddosomething.com/ltgov/

Have a happy and healthy holiday season.
